The Story Behind The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes®

To understand The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes®, you have to understand where it came from—and that story is anything but ordinary.

The brand was founded by a man who was born and raised in the heart of the Finger Lakes, left at 17 to serve in the U.S. Army, and eventually built a life in Mainz, Germany, where he met his wife and raised two daughters.

While living abroad, he traced his family roots to the Thuringian Forest, a beautiful region in central Germany known as das grüne Herz Deutschlands—the Green Heart of Germany.

When the time came to return home to Naples, New York, those two worlds began to speak to each other.

Both are green landscapes shaped by nature. Both inspire a deep sense of belonging in the people who know them. And both remind us that some places become part of who we are.

The idea of a Green Heart also carried a meaning all its own.

The heart has long represented love and our deep attachment to the people and places we hold dear. Green evokes nature, renewal, growth, harmony, and the abundant landscape of the Finger Lakes. Blue represents the water and sky—the depth and stability of the eleven glacial lakes that define the region.

Together, those elements captured something that had always been here: a landscape of rolling hills and eleven glacial lakes, formed millions of years ago and stretching like fingers across the countryside.

Then came one remarkable realization.

Look at a map of the Finger Lakes. Framed by the highways surrounding the region, the eleven glacial lakes trace the unmistakable outline of a heart.

It had been there all along.
